For women, children, family and the vulnerable sectors

ABANSE! PINAY has to its credit the passage of three landmark laws for women in the Philippines:

  • R.A. 8972 “The Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000” which grants state recognition and support for the millions of solo parents in the country
  • R.A. 9208 “Anti-Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, Act of 2003” which criminalizes the trafficking of persons for prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or slavery.
  • R.A. 9262 “Violence Against Women & their Children Law” (Anti-VAWC) which criminalizes all acts of violence committed against women and their children within the household and in intimate relationships and provides legal recourse for the protection of VAWC victims.

  • Sponsored other pro-women bills including the Local Sectoral Representation, Women’s Empowerment, Reproductive Rights and Lactation Stations bills and amendments to the Sexual Harassment Law, RPC provisions on prostitution, concubinage/adultery, New Family Code, Local Government Code, etc.

  • Co-authored the Clean-Air Act and other bills and resolutions on the environment, human rights, people’s participation, urban and rural development, health, education, etc.

  • Consistently worked for the GAA Provision for the GAD budget and exercised oversight over its implementation.

  • Worked in many ways to raise the gender consciousness of the Members and personnel of the House of Representatives and introduced Gender and Development (GAD) policies and approaches, thereby creating a truly gender-responsive legislature.

  • Promoted the use of gender-fair language and methodologies in Congress.

  • Provided support for the construction of women’s centers, classrooms and water systems all over the country and for women’s cooperatives, gender and livelihood training programs, health insurance and scholarships for women.
